Edward Hopper - Summer Interior 1909

"A Rehabilitative Oasis for a Crazed Mental Patient, journeying to find their Sanity"

The Ideas.

Funnily enough, such an outlandish model, does have quite a simple motive behind it all. Essentially, the composition of spaces is designed for one who's mental capacity is questioned, their sanity, or insanity for that matter is put to the ultimate test, an everest, that if conquered, sets them free from their deficiancies. Overall, the series of linked contaminated spaces become a metaphor for a rehabilitative process in which the mental patient must conquer inn order to find their true self. It all starts at the floating bridge. The bridge is floating for one reason, which is to allow those who are viewing the model to examine the possibilities of where this bridge would lead from. The bridge becomes a metaphor for the different experiences and reasons as to which these mental patients have been led here.

Entry into the space is through a window, after entering through this narrow window, the patient finds themselves in the "sound room" whereby soothing tones are played to relax the patient. The sound room is now the 1st step in the rehabilitative process in which this mental patient must complete in order to find their sanity. The dark atmosphere allows for their minds to wonder and for their imaginations to run free, a small space for though and contemplation, that is of course until they move into the next space.

Upon climbing a small flight of stairs, the patient finds themselves in the Broken Light Room. Unlike the Sound room which lacks natural lighting, the Broken Light Rooms allows for a radiant natural light to peer through the thin timber slats that surround the space. The voids between the slats become the ultimate tease for the patient, but also have another meaning. This ultimately is now the 2nd step in the patients rehabilitative process in which their insanity would be cured. This process is characterised by a shifting of light which always changes through the model. As the patient gradually enters a new space, a new leaf is turned in their process and thus more light is exposed to the patient.

The 3rd stage is perhaps the most strenuous and painstaking process for the patient, however, the process is what becomes the most rewarding one aswell after it is eventually complete. A huge set of winding stairs is what awaits the mental patient upon their final journey to their everest. The staircase is flanked by large frosted glass balustrades which while they allow some light through onto the staircases, block the sight of the patient from looking at their surroundings. This is a process reserved for when the patient reaches the summit of their climb. Upon reaching the top of the staircase the patient has reached their final destination, The 3rd spaces aptly named the Freedom Space is the ultimate reward for the patient. The journey is finally complete and they can now lookout to their surroundings with no obstruction whatsoever.
